NFC North Quick Hits: Friday
By Kevin Seifert
Rounding up some newsbits from around the NFC North in quick-hitting fashion:
Item: Detroit Lions tailback Jahvid Best, placed on the physically unable to perform list because of concussions, doesn't appear close to getting on the field.
Comment: Coach Jim Schwartz said the Lions are "very optimistic" that Best will return at some point but acknowledged: "His progress really is not judged day-to-day. It's going to be judged week-to-week." Neither side will reveal details of the situation to reporters, but this has to qualify as a significant disappointment and a potentially major game-changer in the division. One of the NFC North's most explosive players is in essence in an indefinite holding pattern.
Item: Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley missed Friday's practice after suffering a concussion in Thursday's opening workout.
Comment: The concussion occurred in a non-padded practice, but per NFL rules Finley will probably miss a few days. Given Best's nine-month odyssey, it's difficult to downplay the event of any player suffering a concussion.
Item: Packers tight end D.J. Williams claimed he stayed in shape by wrestling cows in the offseason.
Comment: I smell a tall tale.
Item: Minnesota Vikings receiver Percy Harvin said "everything's good" now, about a month after he requested a trade.
Comment: If nothing else, Harvin has solidified himself as one of the NFL's most unpredictable players.
Item: The Vikings worked former defensive end Everson Griffen exclusively as a linebacker Friday.
Comment: According to coach Leslie Frazier, Griffen dropped his weight from about 275 pounds to 258 pounds to prepare for his new role. That suggests linebacker will be his full-time job rather than a part-time specialty. He is a rare athlete. Let's see if he can learn a new position at this point in his career.
Item: Frazier said the Vikings might call upon fans to create a competitive environment for rookie place-kicker Blair Walsh.
Comment: I suggest everyone blow their Vikings horns at once.
