Have at It: Favre's best team

By Kevin Seifert

This one is too juicy to pass up. When Brett Favre said Sunday that Minnesota is the best team that he’s ever played for, my thoughts immediately went back to his time in Green Bay.

You might recall that Favre said in 2006 that the Packers had assembled the most talented team he had played for. A year later, Green Bay finished 13-3 and advanced to the NFC Championship Game. But I’m going to take the liberty here of suggesting Favre’s best-ever team was the group that won Super Bowl XXXI. (Call me crazy, but a championship usually means you’re, like, really, really good.)

So for this week’s edition of Have at It, I’d like to know how you think Favre’s current team compares to the Packers’ 1996 championship group. I’ve provided you the regular players on both teams below to help jog your memory and make apples-to-apples comparisons.

Here’s one statistic to keep in mind about the 1996 team: It led the NFL in scoring (456 points) while also allowing the fewest points in the league (210) that season. No team had done that since the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins, and no one has done it since.

One caveat: Favre qualified his assessment by saying that this Vikings team is the best “physically and from a talent level.” There’s more to success than pure talent and skill -- including chemistry, coaching and, frankly, luck. So while you should take all of those components into account, make sure you remember that Favre was mostly referring to the individual abilities of the teams’ primary players.

As always, I’ll compile a representative sample of your responses and add my own take Friday morning. Have at It.
