Nnamdi Asomugha stays with Calvin

By Kevin Seifert

PHILADELPHIA -- We're nearing the midway point of the second quarter here at Lincoln Financial Field. The Detroit Lions are getting a really nice defensive performance against the Philadelphia Eagles and are holding a 6-0 lead even as receiver Calvin Johnson struggles to get open against the Eagles' elite secondary.

Johnson has caught one pass for 28 yards, an acrobatic catch against double coverage that set up the Lions' second field goal in the first quarter. Quarterback Matthew Stafford threw an interception on a shot into end zone in the second quarter, also against double coverage.

Based on the naked eye, the Eagles have matched up cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha against Johnson on almost every play. (I've noticed Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie against him twice.) In some cases, Asomugha has stayed with Johnson in single coverage, but there have been plenty of double-teams from safeties Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman as well.

Back with you at halftime.
