How vulnerable is Detroit's defense? Even the NFL's most pass-happy offensive coordinator gave in and handed to his tailback 27 times Sunday.
San Francisco's Mike Martz, fired after last season by the Lions, gave Frank Gore 27 carries in a breezy 31-13 victory. Gore gained 130 yards and the 49ers threw the ball only 23 times.
There is no more basic battle in football than run defense, and through three games the 0-3 Lions have given up 523 yards on the ground. Week 3 statistics are still being tabulated, but I'm guessing that figure will remain the worst in the NFL.
I caught a glimpse of quarterback Jon Kitna grimacing in pain on the sideline near the end of the game. No doubt, some Lions fans will start clamoring for Dan Orlovsky or Drew Stanton or Drew Henson or maybe even one of the Hanson brothers. But until the Lions get their run defense straightened out, it's not going to matter who they have at quarterback.
