Lions: A fourth day off for Louis Delmas

By Kevin Seifert

So I've zeroed in on Louis Delmas' practice schedule with the Detroit Lions this summer for a couple of reasons.

Delmas
First, I haven't made the trip yet to Allen Park, Mich., so I don't have any first-hand observations to report. (Don't fret. I'm heading there this week.) Second, NFL teams aren't required to provide injury information at this time of year, so the Lions wouldn't necessarily announce any change in the condition of his knees. And third, Delmas is one of the Lions' best players when healthy, and his availability this season and beyond is important.

So I think we should officially take note that Delmas hasn't practiced in four days, including Saturday afternoon's full-pads affair. (One of those days was scheduled down time for the entire team.) If you're looking for clues, Lions coach Jim Schwartz did provide a significant one Friday afternoon: After about a week of intermittent practicing, Delmas had soreness and "a little bit of swelling."

Is that a doomsday diagnosis? Not by any means. I'm sure the Lions are erring far on the side of caution. But Delmas' absence does speak to the precarious nature of his health and availability, one that we'll need to continue monitoring closely in the coming days and weeks.
