#NFL Rank: Brandon Marshall No. 23
By Michael C. Wright
Chicago Bears receiver Brandon Marshall came in at No. 23 in ESPN’s #NFLRank project, which lists the top 100 offensive and defensive players in the league going into the 2013 season.
Marshall enters his eighth season in 2013, and for a player who tied for second in the NFL in receptions (118) last season, finished third in receiving yardage (1,508) and fourth in receiving touchdowns (11), No. 23 on this list seems a little low. After all, New Orleans tight end Jimmy Graham comes in at No. 11, and Atlanta’s Julio Jones is 13th, while San Francisco’s Vernon Davis, and Atlanta’s Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez rank above Marshall at 18th, 19th, and 20th, respectively.
All respect to Gonzalez, but at this stage of his career, is he really a better player than Marshall?
ESPN Stats & Information said this about Marshall:
“Marshall was targeted on a league-high 41.4 percent of his passing routes in 2012. He recorded at least 100 receptions for the fourth time of his career, one shy of the league record held by Wes Welker.”
That doesn’t strike me as the accomplishments of a 23rd-ranked player. Just saying.
