Capers brings the heat

Green Bay’s defensive performance Sunday against Dallas coincided with a significant uptick of pressure calls from defensive coordinator Dom Capers, as the following numbers from ESPN’s Stats & Information reveal.

In the first half of the season, Capers devoted five or more players to the pass rush on 40.6 percent of the Packers’ defensive snaps. Against the Cowboys, that number elevated to more than half (51.3). Not surprisingly, the Packers had five sacks Sunday after averaging 1.6 per game in their previous eight games.

Frankly, this was how many of us envisioned Capers calling every game this season -- especially after the way his players got after it in the preseason. For a stretch, however, Capers' scheme has looked pretty passive and players responded accordingly. Sunday, cornerback Charles Woodson told Wisconsin reporters: “We want to be an aggressive defense and today we had the calls there to get us pressure on the quarterback.”

I’ll have more on the Packers later Monday in our Third and one series, but I wanted to make sure you got these numbers earlier.
