Black and Blue all over: Game day
By Kevin Seifert
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Greetings from Lambeau Field, where it’s partly sunny and pretty mild. We’re headed toward a beautiful day for November football.
On the trip over, I got to talking with a couple of San Francisco fans -- and, like me, NFL Network junkies. All of us caught Friday night’s replay of the 1998 playoff game between the Packers and 49ers at Candlestick Park. It’s amazing the things you remember and forget.
We all know that game ended with Terrell Owens’ last-second touchdown reception. But I know I watched that game live. Maybe I’m the only one, but I totally forgot that a few plays earlier, Jerry Rice clearly fumbled the ball away. Broadcasters Pat Summerall and John Madden noted the play would be good grist for another run at establishing instant replay.
Call it my anti-Packers bias (JOKING), but I had no recollection of Rice’s fumble. For most NFL fans, it’s the game Owens pulled out. In reality, it’s the game the 49ers won when they got a second chance.
OK. Enough memory lane for one morning. Let’s take a quick spin through the division.
