NFC North: Crash Davis

Continuing a trend of NFC North general managers teasing us by calling press conferences to speak in elite-level generalities, Green Bay general manager Ted Thompson met with local reporters Friday. A day after Detroit general manager Martin Mayhew said he wouldn’t make a decision on the No. 2 overall pick until minutes before the draft, Thompson said: “We're hoping at the end of it that we feel like we got lucky and we got some players that can help our team.”

(Can’t resist taking a moment away to appreciate this exchange from Bull Durham, courtesy Script-O-Rama.com.:
CRASH: It's time you started working on your interviews.
NUKE: What do I gotta do?
CRASH: Learn your cliches. Study them. Know them. They're your friends.
[Crash hands Nuke a small pad and pen.]
CRASH: Write this down.
(beat)
We gotta play 'em one day at a time.
NUKE: Boring.
CRASH: Of course. That's the point.
(beat)
I'm just happy to be here and hope I can help the ballclub.
NUKE: Jesus.
CRASH: Write, write -- I just wanta give it my best shot and, Good Lord willing, things'll work out.
[Nuke starts writing them down.]
NUKE: ... Good Lord willing, things'll work out.)

One thing I did find interesting and believable: Thompson said he won’t reach for an offensive tackle at No. 23 overall. Of his current roster of offensive line, Thompson said: “I think I feel better than you guys do” and said drafting a tackle high isn’t a “necessary thing.”

“I think our offensive line group, I think our core is building up to where we can have a little more flexibility,” Thompson said. “But at the same time, it is what it is. If there's someone available we think can do that, certainly that's going to be a consideration. But we're not going to reach on something.”

We’re all set to release our Blog Network mock draft on Monday. I’ll maintain a degree of suspense throughout the weekend, but I will say I found a tackle for the Packers to take at No. 23. I’ll let you decide if it was a reach.
