Detroit's decision Monday to release veteran offensive lineman George Foster offers more evidence for the role of newcomer Jon Jansen, who agreed to terms Friday and took a physical Monday.
Foster had been penciled in as competition for right tackle Gosder Cherilus, and probably would have served as a backup at both tackle positions once the season began. If Jansen can stay healthy, he's an upgrade over Foster in both scenarios: He will give Cherilus more of a run for the starting job and be a better backup if he's in a reserve role.
Coach Jim Schwartz told reporters Monday that Jansen will focus on right tackle but will be expected to know other positions, according to Nicholas J. Cotsonika of the Detroit Free Press. As we discussed Friday, Jansen is a high-caliber insurance project for the Plan A on the offensive line.
