The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced their team captains Wednesday morning and there’s one name on the list that’s hugely significant.

That’s quarterback Josh Freeman. He’s a second-year player and he’s not having a leadership role thrust upon him by the coaches. He’s been elected into that role. The captains were voted on by players, and I think you can take this selection as a sign that Freeman’s teammates recognize all the hard work he put in at One Buccaneer Place this offseason and how quickly he has matured.

Center Jeff Faine is the other offensive captain. Cornerback Ronde Barber and linebacker Barrett Ruud are the defensive captains and Andrew Economos is the special-teams captain.
