Although there was an assumption the Saints might have had a handshake deal in place with linebacker Jonathan Vilma to re-sign soon after free agency started, it hasn't happened yet. Looks like the Bucs are making a strong run at Vilma and this could get real interesting. The Bucs lost out to the Redskins in the Albert Haynesworth sweepstakes. New coach Raheem Morris and general manager Mark Dominik don't want to be the runner-up again. If the Saints end up losing Vilma, this could be disastrous because he was one of the few bright spots on the defense.

So much for the possibility of teams holding off on giving lesser players much money at the start of free agency. Carolina backup offensive tackle Frank Omiyale got a four-year, $14 million deal with the Chicago Bears and Atlanta linebacker Michel Boley is expected to get an offer from the Giants worth $5 million a year.

Geoff Hangartner, a backup center/guard for Carolina will visit Buffalo Friday.
