Panthers scoring at historic pace

The Carolina Panthers appear poised to make some unpleasant history this week.

Unless they can find a way to score 32 points with receiver Steve Smith likely out and Chicago defensive end Julius Peppers pretty much guaranteed to stay focused for an entire game at Bank of America Stadium for perhaps the first time ever, the Panthers are going to set a franchise record for fewest points scored in their first five games.

Carolina has produced just 46 points in its 0-4 start and that’s the lowest point total of any NFL team that has played four games so far this season.

The Panthers set their five-game low in 2004, when they scored 77 points during a 1-4 start. The 1995 expansion Panthers scored 79 points in their first five games.
