I generally avoid making predictions, but I’m going to break from that for a moment. I’m going out on a limb and guessing that voters John Clayton, Paul Kuharsky, Mike Sando and James Walker will have the wisdom to put three NFC South teams in the top 10 when ESPN.com’s Power Rankings come out Tuesday.
They almost did it last week when the Atlanta Falcons were No. 1, the New Orleans Saints No. 9 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers No. 11. With a pair of top-10 teams losing (the Giants and Colts), and the Bucs scoring a road shutout at San Francisco, Tampa Bay almost has to jump into the top 10.
It also would enhance the argument that the NFC South is the league’s strongest division this season. Although the 1-9 Carolina Panthers drag things down a bit, the other three teams are at least 7-3. No other division has more than two teams with records above .500.
Like I said, I’m confident Clayton, Kuharsky, Sando and Walker will get it right. But, just in case, I’m sending them each a copy of this.
