Part of the reason the Atlanta Falcons are tied for the league’s best record (9-2) is because they play smart football. The best example of that might be penalties.
According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Falcons continue to be the league’s least-penalized team. They’ve been whistled for 53 penalties and 42 of those have been accepted. Both numbers are league lows.
The rest of the NFC South also fares pretty well when it comes to penalties. The New Orleans Saints have been called for 68 penalties and had 55 accepted. Only three teams have had fewer penalties accepted.
Carolina and Tampa Bay each have had 83 penalties called on them and 70 of those accepted. That ties them for 18th in the league in penalties accepted against them.
For perspective, Detroit leads the league in penalties whistled (120) and accepted (106).
