Kicking the tires on Cam Newton

In this interview with Colin Cowherd on "The Herd," Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay says NFL general managers should view Auburn quarterback Cam Newton as the ultimate research project.

That pretty much goes along with what ESPN draft expert Todd McShay has been saying about how any team seriously interested in drafting Newton should be in his "hip pocket'' right up until the draft.

Obviously, the Carolina Panthers who hold the No. 1 pick in the draft have been doing lots of homework on Newton. As a matter of fact, I'm going to have a column Thursday afternoon in which I'll write about which way I think the Panthers are leaning and what I think they should do with the top pick.
