D. Orlando Ledbetter reports the Falcons and Raiders could gather for an 11-on-11 scrimmage in the Atlanta area next week.

Makes some sense because Richard Seymour, a University of Georgia product, is setting up a series of workouts for about 40 members of the Raiders in Duluth. Ga. The Falcons have been holding some workouts of their own in suburban Atlanta and it wouldn’t be hard to get the two teams together.

But would it really be wise to get two teams for an 11-on-11 scrimmage in May? Coaches can’t be involved, and even if the scrimmage is set for a non-contact format, it might be tough to keep it that way. Players are competitive and they might be even more aggressive with no coaches watching over them.

While it sounds nice to get two teams together for a little work, it also sounds like a formula for an unnecessary injury or two. Workouts are great and players around the league should all be staying in shape so they're ready whenever training camps open. But training camp is the time for 11-on-11 scrimmages. If you start doing them in May, you're asking for trouble.
