We're not there just yet, but we've got some important dates coming up as teams get their rosters ready for the regular season.
With that in mind, I thought I'd share a glimpse at the official NFL calendar as it relates to establishing rosters and the regular-season salary cap to help answer some of the questions I've been getting:
Sept. 1 -- Roster cut-down to maximum of 75 players on Active List by 4 P.M., ET.
Sept. 2 -- All tryouts on this date and for the remainder of the season must be reported to the League office.
Sept. 5 -- Roster cut-down to maximum of 53 players on Active/Inactive List by 4 P.M., ET. Clubs may dress minimum of 42 and maximum of 45 players and Third Quarterback for each regular-season and postseason game.
Sept. 5 -- Simultaneously with the cut-down to 53, clubs that have players in the categories of Active/Physically Unable to Perform or Active/Non-Football Injury or Illness must take one of the following options: place player on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform or Reserve/Non-Football Injury or Illness, whichever is applicable; ask waivers; terminate; trade; or continue to count him on Active List.
Sept. 6 -- After noon, ET, clubs may establish a Practice Squad of eight players by signing free agents who do not have an accrued season of free agency credit or who were on the 45-player Active List for less than nine regular-season games during their only Accrued Season(s). A player cannot participate on the Practice Squad for more than three seasons.
Sept. 9 -- All clubs are required to file a personnel (injury) report with their conference information manager by 4 p.m. ET. Reports are to be filed every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before a regular-season game by 4 p.m. ET (or as soon as possible after the completion of practice). An update must also be reported if there is any change in a player's condition after Friday.
Sept. 9 -- Beginning at 4 P.M. ET, Team Salary includes all players receiving compensation under their 2009 contracts. Top 51 rule is no longer in effect.
