Two NFC South quarterbacks had season highs in Total QBR Sunday.

Atlanta’s Matt Ryan did it in a win against Carolina. But his opponent, rookie Cam Newton, also had a season- and career-high Total QBR.

Ryan had 92.5 points, slightly edging Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers (91.9) for the league’s best rating Sunday. Ryan’s total was increased by the fact he completed all three of his third-down passing attempts on third down in the fourth quarter. All three went for first downs. Since 2008, Ryan has 12 games with a Total QBR of 90 or better. That ranks him No. 2 in the league behind Philip Rivers (13).

Despite the loss, Newton had a career-best 80.6 Total QBR. The other two NFC South quarterbacks, Josh Freeman and Drew Brees, also went head to head Sunday.

The Buccaneers defeated the Saints, 26-20, but Total QBR shows a slightly different story. Brees threw three interceptions and had a season-low 60.4 Total QBR. But that rating was slightly better than Freeman’s 57.7.

For the season, Brees leads NFC South quarterbacks and is No. 4 in the league, with a 74.8 Total QBR. Ryan is No. 8 in the league at 63.3.

Newton (54.8) is No. 17 and Freeman (50.5) is No. 19.
