Not a big surprise, but still some pretty significant news out of New Orleans.

Rookie running back Mark Ingram will miss Sunday’s game with St. Louis because of an injured right heel, coach Sean Payton said. Ingram has not practiced this week. As expected, Payton also said this means the Saints will put Chris Ivory on the 53-man roster.

Ivory, last season’s leading rusher, had been on the physically unable to perform list all season, but returned to practice this week.

What’s this mean for the Saints backfield?

Ingram had been used in a rotation with Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles. I’m guessing Payton will try to bring Ivory back gradually, so I wouldn’t expect him to instantly get all of Ingram’s carries.

It’s more logical to give Thomas and Sproles each a few more carries than usual. Both have been playing well. Ivory might get a few carries, but I suspect Thomas and Sproles will handle the bulk of the work.
