Lawrence Sidbury emerging for Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons suddenly have a pass rush, but it’s not coming from the direction you might have expected.

Veteran defensive end John Abraham and high-priced free agent Ray Edwards have combined for six sacks. Abraham has four and Edwards has two. Neither of those two recorded a sack in Sunday’s victory against Minnesota, but the Falcons took quarterback Christian Ponder down four times.

Two of those sacks came from third-year defensive end Lawrence Sidbury. He’s now tied for the team lead with four sacks. Not bad for a guy who recorded one sack in his first two NFL seasons.

“Lawrence has done a nice job in his rotation,’’ coach Mike Smith said. “He’s taken advantage of his opportunities when he’s had an opportunity to get out there and be part of the rotation. When you have that type of production, it sure turns a lot of heads, not only on our coaching staff but on the opponent’s staff as well.”

That’s a good point. Now that Sidbury is producing, opponents are going to have to account for him. That could free up Abraham and Edwards to come up with more sacks or at least continuing to put pressure on quarterbacks.
