The Panthers just made it official -- they announced the signing of quarterback A.J. Feeley and placed Josh McCown on the injured reserve list.
We all knew Monday afternoon this was coming, but the move wasn’t final until Feeley arrived in Charlotte and was able to pass a physical examination.
Now comes the mental part. He’s got to start learning a new playbook and I’m sure he’ll be spending lots of time with offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson over the next few days.
In a best-case scenario, Feeley never even gets on the field and Jake Delhomme makes a strong rebound from his dismal performance Sunday. But this isn’t looking like a best-case scenario right now, and Feeley could be on the field very quickly.
The Panthers go to Atlanta this weekend and they’re hoping Delhomme snaps out of his slump. But what if he continues to struggle? Not sure the Panthers want to throw Matt Moore out there. The Panthers like Moore, but think he’s a project. This isn’t the time for projects.
If Feeley can get even a good portion of the playbook digested, I think there’s a good chance the Panthers make him the No. 2 quarterback Sunday. They might even make him No. 1 before long if Delhomme continues the downhill spiral.
