The ESPN.com Power Rankings for Week 2 are out and the NFC South has a team in the top five and another in the top 10. Sad part is, the division also has a pair of teams at the bottom of the rankings.
First, the good stuff. The Atlanta Falcons are No. 4 and the New Orleans Saints are No. 7, according to our panel of voters. I think the Falcons have a chance to make a real statement Sunday when they go on the road to New England.
I also think the Saints made a pretty big statement with their win in Philadelphia and I’m not so sure they deserve to be ranked behind the Falcons at this moment. A New Orleans win in Buffalo on Sunday would have to make the Saints a strong candidate for the top five and could set up a huge Week 4 showdown at home against the New York Jets.
Enough about the top of the poll. The division’s two winless teams are near the bottom. Carolina is No. 25 and judging by the teams ranked beneath the Panthers, I’d say they’re making a real case for being the league’s biggest disappointment -- so far.
Tampa Bay came in at No. 28. Not much was expected out of the Bucs, so the fact they’re winless is no big surprised. But they could be headed for the land of where rankings start with 3s, not 2s, if they lose to the Giants on Sunday.
