PALM BEACH, Fla. -- New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton has reached out to Bill Parcells about the possibility of taking over as interim head coach while Payton serves a one-year suspension, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports.

The report does not say Parcells is willing to take the job or that it even has been offered to him. It simply says that Payton has discussed this scenario with his mentor.

Payton was an assistant when Parcells was in Dallas and Payton often talks about Parcells having a huge influence on his career.

If Parcells is willing to coach again, this scenario could make plenty of sense. It would allow the Saints to keep the rest of their coaching staff in their current places. The offensive staff continued to thrive last season when Payton suffered a broken leg and offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael took over play-calling duties. Steve Spagnuolo is the new defensive coordinator.

Parcells shares many of Payton’s philosophies and clearly has a wealth of experience as a head coach. He also has worked as president of the Miami Dolphins and his background in personnel could help the Saints while general manager Mickey Loomis is suspended for the first eight games of the season.

This potential move makes sense on a lot of levels. But again, there’s no indication if Parcells wants to coach or if he’s been offered the job.

Saints owner Tom Benson has not yet commented publicly on the Saints' punishments for running a three-year bounty program or talked about how he'll replace Payton when his suspension begins April 1. Benson is in attendance at the owners meeting. He walked out of a meeting moments ago, but did not speak to the media.
