| Nesbit |
Just when it looked like things couldn't get any worse for the Saints, they have.
The news that left guard Jamar Nesbit has been suspended for four games for violating the league's policy on anabolic steroids and related substances leaves an offense that already was thin because of injuries in deep trouble.
Rookie Carl Nicks is the likely replacement for Nesbit, who had started every game at left guard since the start of the 2006 season. There also is concern that left tackle Jammal Brown could miss some time with a groin injury. If Brown is out for any period of time, Zach Strief would have to take over as the left tackle. Second-year pro Jermon Bushrod is the only other offensive lineman on the roster, although the Saints probably will sign a lineman to take Nesbit's roster spot.
The woes on the offensive line come at the same time the Saints have receiver Marques Colston and tight end Jeremy Shockey out with injuries and running back Deuce McAllister barely has played as he comes back from knee surgery.
The bottom line is quarterback Drew Brees and running back Reggie Bush are going to have to carry this offense or else the Saints could end up in a very big hole. They have three straight home games, including San Francisco on Sunday and need to find a way to come out of that stretch with at least two wins.
