TAMPA, Fla. -- It’s too early in the preseason to declare a second-round draft pick as a starter, but it sure looks and sounds like Tampa Bay linebacker Lavonte David is fast approaching that status.
The 58th overall pick in the draft drew high praise from coach Greg Schiano after Friday morning’s practice.
“He’s our kind of guy,’’ Schiano said. “Loves it. Prepared. Unselfish.’’
Yeah, we’ve heard a lot about “Buccaneer Men’’ since Schiano’s arrival and David certainly fits that profile. But there are some other reasons the Bucs should be excited about David. This guy is fast and knows how to make big plays.
Tampa Bay didn’t get a lot of big plays from its linebackers last season. That’s why Geno Hayes is gone and David likely will be starting on the outside with Quincy Black. Mason Foster returns as the middle linebacker. Just the experience of going through last season as a starter Foster should be a lot better in his second NFL season. Black had a rough season last year, but the Bucs still have high hopes for him.
It sure seems like part of their thought process is that David’s presence will help Foster and Black become better linebackers.
