We already have seen some roster cuts begin to trickle out and that’s only going to continue throughout the day -- and probably much of the night -- Friday.
The NFL has turned cut-down day into a prime-time event. Transactions to get rosters down to 53 players don’t have to be into the league office until 9 p.m. ET on Friday. Players and agents may reveal a fair amount of the moves before that, but my guess is we won’t start getting official announcements from teams until the evening. Coaches and general managers often talk about “competitive advantage’’ and this is a situation where teams don’t want to give opponents any edge in knowing what’s going to be on the waiver wire until they absolutely have to.
I’ll continue to monitor news that trickles out during the day, but stay tuned tonight. Once each NFC South team makes its official announcement, I’ll do roster breakdowns on all four teams. I don't have an exact time for you. It will depend on when each of the four NFC South teams makes its announcement, so just keep checking back.
A few other notes related to roster reductions. The players that are waived Friday can be claimed by other teams up until noon ET on Saturday. At noon Saturday, teams can begin signing players to their practice squad. To be eligible for the practice squad, players cannot have an accrued season of free-agency credit. If they were on the 46-player active list last year, it has to be for less than nine regular-season games. Players cannot be on the practice squad for more than three seasons.
At 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, all teams have to be in compliance with the salary cap. During the offseason, only the top 51 cap figures count toward the team’s cap figure. On Tuesday, all salary cap figures, including what remains for players no longer on the roster, come into play.
