It still is very early in his career, but there’s one thing that already is obvious about Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie running back Doug Martin.
Although he’s not the biggest back around, he can get you yards after contact. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Martin had 55 rushing yards after first contact in Sunday's win against the Carolina Panthers. That was the fourth-highest total in the league in Week 1.
Martin averaged 2.3 yards after contact, the seventh-best figure in the league. For context, Adrian Peterson and Frank Gore, two of the bigger-name backs each averaged 2.4 yards after contact.
The only other NFC South running backs to show up on the list were Atlanta’s Michael Turner and Jacquizz Rodgers. Turner averaged 1.2 yards and Rodgers averaged 1.3.
