Carolina receiver Steve Smith said there was no need to apologize for his comment Sunday that he no longer was an asset to the Panthers.

My question: Who the heck thought Smith should apologize?

The guy has many flaws, but what’s wrong with him stating the obvious after he had a game in which he caught one pass for four yards? Nothing at all, in my book.

Smith was frustrated and he should be. He’s one of the most talented receivers in the league. He should be getting the ball a lot more than that and it’s the fault of many others on Carolina’s offense and on the coaching staff that he’s not. To his credit, Smith didn’t single out anyone, although there are plenty of worthy targets (quarterback Jake Delhomme, fellow receiver Muhsin Muhammad, coordinator Jeff Davidson and coach John Fox to name a few).

"I want to win, and I want to be involved in a win. And if a person feels like he’s uninvolved, that should be taken in the manner in which it has been said."

Right and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Now, get the guy the ball.
