William Moore is player of the week

Atlanta safety William Moore just got an award and some more negotiating clout.

The NFL just announced that Moore has been named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week. That comes after Moore had perhaps the best game of his career, recording two interceptions and 13 tackles (according to the Falcons) in a victory over New Orleans in which the Falcons ended Drew Brees' streak of games with at least one touchdown pass at 54.

According to breakdowns by the Atlanta coaching staff, Moore leads the Falcons with 105 tackles (74) solo on the season, including four tackles for loss. Moore also has four interceptions and a sack.

This is the first player of the week award of Moore’s career and it couldn’t come at a better time. Moore, who struggled with consistency earlier in his career, has joined with Thomas DeCoud to form one of the league’s best safety tandems this season.

That should come in handy after the season because Moore is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. Although the Falcons don’t have a lot of salary-cap room for 2013, I’m pretty sure re-signing Moore will be one of their top offseason priorities.
