It’s been a tough year for the Carolina Panthers. But there’s some good news for a change.

Linebacker James Anderson has been chosen as this year’s winner of the Tom Berry Good Guy Award. The award is presented by the Carolinas chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America. I’m the NFC South representative on the PFWA’s board of directors and I’m happy to have worked on putting this award together with the Carolina writers each year since 2009.

It’s for a good cause. Tom Berry was the longtime columnist and Panthers beat writer for the High Point (N.C.) Enterprise. Tom passed away at the start of the 2009 season. I spent hundreds of days in the Bank of America Stadium media room, on the training camp field at Wofford College and sitting in airports with Tom. He truly was a classy guy and a professional.

This award was designed to honor Tom’s legacy while also honoring the member of the Panthers who was most helpful to the media. Anderson was the hands-down winner this year. The members of the local media all said that, win or lose, Anderson was always accessible and very professional.

Past winners of the award are Captain Munnerlyn, Jordan Gross and Brad Hoover.
