The New Orleans Saints continue to work frantically to get under the salary cap.
The latest move is the restructuring of the contract of defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley.
Bunkley had been scheduled to count $4.7 million against the cap. But the new deal drops his cap hit to $2.5 million.
Bunkley had been scheduled to make $3.7 million in base salary. But the Saints wrote him a check for a $3 million signing bonus and dropped his base salary to $750,000.
The pro-rated bonus money will be spread over the life of the contract.
It’s unclear exactly where the Saints are at in terms of the salary cap because this situation is very fluid. But John Clayton and I crunched our numbers and we believe the Saints are somewhere at about $2.9 million over the cap.
That means more restructures and possibly releases are coming.
