Around the NFC South

Let's catch up on some news and notes from around the division:

Tight end Tony Gonzalez has rejoined the team. In a pre-arranged deal with coach Mike Smith, Gonzalez took part in the first three days of camp and then went to California to take care of a family commitment. Gonzalez is expected to participate in this week’s preseason game.

Linebacker Jon Beason, who is coming off microfracture knee surgery, practiced for the first time this preseason on Sunday. If Beason can get back to full strength, he could join Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis to give Carolina one of the league’s top linebacker corps.

Mike Triplett writes that defensive end Cameron Jordan stood out in Friday’s preseason game. Everyone talks about how the pass rush will have to come from the outside linebackers and there’s truth in that. But Jordan is well suited to be an impact player as a defensive end in the 3-4 scheme.

Coach Greg Schiano said he’s not concerned about a first-team offense that hasn’t done much in the first two games. It’s only the preseason. Still, fans might rest a little easier if the Bucs at least show the ability to move the ball a little bit.
