CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The last time Ted Ginn Jr. returned a kick in a game was a last-ditch attempt to help the San Francisco 49ers beat the Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII.

He was stopped near midfield.

Now a Panther, Ginn's return skills have been kept under wraps during the first two preseason games while the coaches looked at other players.

He'll make his debut Thursday versus the same team he ended against last season.

"This is a big week because this is really your trial run, so we'll have most of our frontline specialists out there on our kickoff return team,'' head coach Ron Rivera said. "He'll get a couple of shots, and it will be fun to see exactly where he is and how we mesh with him.''

Carolina's kick return game could use a boost after averaging 21.8 yards in two preseason games. Ginn averaged 27.6 yards per kickoff return in 2011 and 23 yards last season.
