Coby Fleener will cost only $2.4 million against Saints' 2016 cap

Although tight end Coby Fleener’s deal with the New Orleans Saints is worth $7.2 million per year, it will only count $2.4 million against their salary cap in 2016.

As usual, the Saints backloaded the cap costs in Fleener’s five-year, $36 million contract, which should leave them enough room to sign at least one or two more key free agents. Fleener, 27, received an $8 million signing bonus and a total of $14.5 million fully guaranteed.

The Saints should still have about $4-5 million in cap space after Wednesday’s moves, which also included re-signing kicker Kai Forbath and offering restricted-free-agent tenders to guard Tim Lelito and tight end Josh Hill.

Signing bonus: $8 million

2016: $800,000 base salary, fully guaranteed. Cap cost $2.4 million.

2017: $5.8 million salary, fully guaranteed. $100,000 workout bonus. Cap cost $7.5 million.

2018: $6.3 million salary ($3.4 million of which is guaranteed for injury only; becomes fully guaranteed on third day of 2018 waiver period). $100,000 workout bonus. Cap cost $8 million.

2019: $6.3 million salary. $1 million roster bonus. $100,000 workout bonus. Cap cost $9 million.

2020: $6.4 million salary. $1 million roster bonus. $100,000 workout bonus. Cap cost $9.1 million.
