Fox, Morris check out Tebow

On St. Timothy’s Day here in Florida, at least two NFC South coaches watched perhaps the most anticipated workout in the history of workouts.

Carolina’s John Fox and Tampa Bay’s Raheem Morris reportedly were in attendance to watch Florida quarterback Tim Tebow unveil his new throwing motion. We’re not sure precisely what Sean Payton and Mike Smith were up to Wednesday, but we’ve got no indications they were anywhere near Gainesville.

Although the Bucs have done stranger things, especially over the last year, it’s a pretty safe bet they’re not going to draft Tebow. Morris watched his workout. But presumably Morris was there because Gainesville’s a quick trip from Tampa and Florida has some intriguing prospects at positions where the Bucs actually need help. They’re committed to Josh Freeman as their quarterback.

The more interesting thing was Fox’s presence. I repeatedly say don’t read too much into who attends which workouts and what players teams bring in for visits or talk to at the combine or Senior Bowl. Teams talk to a lot of players. It’s all part of the process.

But in the case of Tebow and the Panthers, the signs are starting to show there might really be something to this. They already had a private interview with Tebow and Fox doesn’t show up at workouts just to show up at workouts.

The Panthers have indicated they plan to go with Matt Moore as their starter, but there are a lot of people around the league that think they’ll bring in a quarterback with some experience to compete for the job or at least be a backup to Moore. That hasn’t happened yet and it makes you wonder if the Panthers really would draft Tebow.

I don’t think they can afford to. Fox has to win now and so does general manager Marty Hurney. Let’s be real honest here: Although Tebow is probably the best overall player in the history of college football (at least in my lifetime), he is a project as an NFL quarterback.

He’s just switched his throwing motion and he’s never run a pro-style offense. Maybe he develops into something down the road. But he’s not going to come in and light it up right away as a starting quarterback.

Fox and Hurney have other needs they need to take care of. Can’t help but wonder if they might be hearing a voice from above telling them to take or at least look at Tebow. I’m just saying owner Jerry Richardson was infatuated with Chris Weinke, the last big novelty out of a Florida school, back in 2001. Richardson went so far as to call Weinke the next Roger Staubach. It was a pretty good line at the time, but Weinke spent more of his career resembling Roger Rabbit than Staubach.
