The Falcons just closed out the third round of the draft by taking Alabama offensive lineman Mike Johnson.
He officially was drafted as a guard, but he also played some tackle in college. True to form, general manager Thomas Dimitroff stuck to a need with this compensatory pick. The Falcons have Justin Blalock and Harvey Dahl as their starting guards, but neither is under contract for the long term. In the short term, Johnson should provide some depth in the interior of the line.
He’s got no experience as a center and the Falcons are looking for an eventual replacement for Todd McClure. But the Falcons have some other guys who can play center and Johnson gives the offensive line more flexibility.
