The Falcons turned to a veteran player Wednesday to add some depth in their backfield. Verron Haynes, who spent the last six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was signed by Atlanta.
It's a homecoming for Haynes, who grew up in Sandy Springs, Ga. and played at the University of Georgia. It also is a chance for Haynes to reunite with offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, who was in the same role with the Steelers for the first two seasons Haynes was in Pittsburgh.
The Falcons are set with Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood as their top two running backs, but Haynes, who also can play special teams, has a shot as the No. 3 back. The Falcons released Troy Bergeron to make room for Haynes.
