Bucs get a Pro Bowler in Donald Penn

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had been shutout in Pro Bowl selections, had that streak come to an end Monday.

Offensive tackle Donald Penn was added to the NFC squad because Green Bay’s Chad Clifton will be playing in the Super Bowl. Despite a 10-6 record, the Bucs didn’t have any players elected to the Pro Bowl team and Penn is the first alternate to get in.

It’s the first Pro Bowl of Penn’s five-year career and it comes after he signed a big contract this season. If Penn’s contract carries any Pro Bowl bonuses, he’s not likely to collect this time. In most contracts, a player must be elected to the Pro Bowl on the initial balloting to earn the bonus. Inclusion as an alternate usually doesn’t trigger the bonus.
