Around the NFC South
By Pat Yasinskas
Let’s take a look at some headlines around the NFC South and give you a programming note.
Football Outsiders takes a look at pressing offseason questions for every team in the NFC South. The questions are good and I like the one about Tampa Bay perhaps being next year’s Green Bay.
New Orleans coach Sean Payton said he’s anxious to meet with defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, who is visiting the Saints Thursday. Rogers isn’t subject to free agency rules and can be signed immediately because he was released by the Browns last week.
Ira Kaufman writes that Tennessee defensive end Jason Babin could be a target for the Buccaneers in free agency. We’ll see if Babin makes it to free agency and we’ll see if the labor situation gets straightened out to allow free agency. But I like the idea. The Bucs need to overhaul their pass rush. They can do some of it in the draft and adding a veteran in free agency might speed up the development of the defense. If there is a labor agreement, Tampa Bay is going to have a lot of salary-cap room.
Finally, we have an injury report, even though it’s the offseason. I had previously listed myself as doubtful for this Friday’s NFC South chat. But my surgically-repaired knees are progressing much faster than expected. I’m walking, with a bit of support and am optimistic that there will be even more improvement tomorrow. I’m changing the injury report to questionable with the arrow pointing toward probable for Friday’s chat at 1 p.m. ET. I’ll give you an official verdict on the blog Friday morning.
