I was going through my notes from last weekend's minicamp in New Orleans as I worked on a column for Friday and I came across one very good quote from Saints coach Sean Payton that deserves mention.
In a Monday item, we told you Payton said the Saints won't be turning to the Wildcat offense (or, reading between the lines, Michael Vick). Payton's basic answer was he didn't want to take any snaps away from quarterback Drew Brees, which is more than understandable. But this leftover quote expands on Payton's logic a bit.
"I can understand the reasons for using it when you're trying to take advantage of your skill set and what you have,'' Payton said. "That's not to say I would never use it. If I was in a position where I didn't have a guy like Brees, then you're in a position when you're looking at ways of trying to manufacture yards that you can't already have or account for.''
Excellent point and give Payton credit for his diplomacy. That was a very nice way of saying, "If you've got a real NFL quarterback, you don't need to resort to gimmicks''.
