Falcons place high value on depth
By Pat Yasinskas
I just got the numbers for the two-year contract offensive tackle Will Svitek signed with the Atlanta Falcons and they’re more interesting and higher than I expected.
Svitek’s been a backup and a functional one in his two years with the Falcons. I don’t believe Atlanta sees him as an eventual starter, although they certainly could look elsewhere to upgrade over left tackle Sam Baker. The Falcons have some other potential free agents and that will be sorted out if and when there is a labor agreement.
But what we can take from Svitek’s contract is that the Falcons place a pretty high value on having depth on the offensive line. Svitek didn’t get starter money, but he got pretty good backup money.
He received a $1.26 million signing bonus. He’ll have a $790,500 base salary in 2011 and a $1.43 million cap figure. In 2012, he’s scheduled to make $951,000 in base salary and count $1.58 million against the salary cap.
