Breaking down Garrett Hartley's contract
By Pat Yasinskas
We told you last week kicker Garrett Hartley signed a five-year contract with the New Orleans Saints. Now, it’s time to shed some more light on the deal, which may have been the Saints’ way of giving a vote of confidence to a talented young kicker, who has been a bit erratic at times.
Part of the reason for this deal might have been an attempt by the Saints to put Hartley at ease for the long term and it looks like they’ve done that. I’ve got details on Hartley’s contract and he was taken care of pretty nicely.
The most significant part of the contract is the signing bonus. Hartley collected $2.526 million up front, which is a very nice bonus for a kicker. His scheduled base salaries are $558,000 for 2011, $650,000 for 2012, $734,000 for 2013, $822,000 in 2014 and $910,000 for 2015. But the contract also includes escalator clauses that could boost Hartley’s base salary significantly in each of the final four years of the contract.
As it stands, Hartley’s average per year is $1.4 million, which is slightly above the average for kickers and punters in 2010.
