Panthers shore up safety spot
By Pat Yasinskas
The Carolina Panthers have signed former Chicago safety Kevin Payne, according to Brad Biggs.
Payne started all 16 games at strong safety for Chicago in 2008 and had a career-high four interceptions. His 2009 season was cut short by an injury and he was traded to St. Louis in 2010. But Payne missed the entire 2010 season with an injury.
If healthy, Payne could compete with Sherrod Martin and Charles Godfrey for a starting job in Carolina.
