Buccaneers' free agent paying off
By Pat Yasinskas
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have drawn a lot of criticism for not signing more free agents this year. But the one guy they did sign had a big impact on Sunday’s game.
That was punter Michael Koenen. He averaged 49.8 net yards per punt in a 26-20 victory over the Saints. Koenen placed three punts inside the 20-yard line. Koenen’s biggest punt came with just under 10 minutes remaining when he hit a 58-yard punt that turned into 68 net yards when return man Darren Sproles lost 10 yards on the return.
Perhaps Koenen’s best strength is that he’s avoided touchbacks on punts. He hasn’t a touchback this season and placed one punt at New Orleans’ 2-yard line.
