Newton, Freeman struggle in Total QBR
By Pat Yasinskas
The NFC South’s two youngest quarterbacks had dismal games Sunday, according to Total QBR.
Carolina rookie Cam Newton ranked No. 24 in the league with a 24.4 Total QBR. A score of 50 is considered average, but Newton was well below average and he wasn’t alone.
Tampa Bay’s Josh Freeman was No. 29 at 13.6. That was second to last among starting quarterbacks because the ratings don’t include the Monday night game. Only Indianapolis’ Curtis Painter (4.8) was worse than Freeman.
No surprise that New Orleans’ Drew Brees had the NFC South’s best Total QBR (91.7) of the day. Brees’ score was No. 4 in the league. Atlanta’s Matt Ryan (55.0) came in at No. 12.
For the season, Brees has a 77.6 Total QBR. That’s second in the NFL, behind only Aaron Rodgers (88.0). Ryan (62.5) is No. 9.
Newton (56.8) is No. 13 and Freeman (45.0) is No. 23.
