Panthers add safety depth
By Pat Yasinskas
The Carolina Panthers, who had been silent in free agency so far, have made a move.
They just announced they have signed Haruki Nakamura. He’s been a backup safety and special-teams player in Baltimore the past four seasons.
He could end up being nothing more than a backup safety and special-teams player in Carolina, and I don’t think that would be a huge disappointment for the Panthers.
But they also see some upside with this move. Safety Sherrod Martin didn’t have a great year last season. At the very least, the Panthers are hoping Nakamura’s signing will light a fire under Martin and get him to play better.
If Nakamura, who never really had a chance to start in Baltimore, can come in and win the job, then that’s simply a bonus for the Panthers.
The Panthers also released reserve defensive lineman DeMario Pressley.
