Ryan outduels Rivers in Falcons win
By Pat Yasinskas
Let's turn to ESPN Stats & Information for a look at how the Falcons defeated the San Diego Chargers 27-3 on Sunday.
Matt Ryan outdueled Philip Rivers when it came to dealing with pressure. When facing five or more pass rushers, Ryan completed 83.3 percent (10-of-12) of his passes, averaging 6.7 yards per attempt and throwing for a touchdown. Rivers completed only 42.9 percent (2-of-7) of his passes, averaging 4.8 yards per attempt and was intercepted twice.
Although Atlanta’s running game hasn’t been stellar this year, the mere presence of Michael Turner and Jacquizz Rodgers still caused problems for defenses. Against San Diego, Ryan completed all seven pass attempts of play action for 67 yards and a touchdown. Even before Sunday, Ryan had been efficient with play action, completing 17 of 21 passes with no sacks and no interceptions.
