Where they rank on offense, defense
By Pat Yasinskas
Even after holding Philadelphia to 13 points in Monday night’s victory, the New Orleans defense continues to rank last in the league.
The NFL’s latest rankings are out and the Saints remain at No. 32 overall. They’re No. 32 against the run and No. 29 against the pass.
But the Saints have some NFC South company at the bottom of the defensive rankings. Although the Falcons are undefeated, they’re No. 26 in total defense (28th against the run and 22nd against the pass).
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers rank No. 1 in run defense, but that’s not enough to give them a good overall rating. They’re No. 29 overall, largely because they’re No. 32 against the pass.
Although they’re 2-6, the Carolina Panthers have the division’s highest-rated defense. The Panthers are tied for No. 13 overall (No. 20 against the run and No. 13 against the pass).
New Orleans has the NFC South’s top-rated offense. The Saints are No. 5 overall (No. 2 in passing and No. 30 in rushing). But they’re not the division’s only top-10 offense because Tampa Bay has worked its way into the mix.
The Bucs are No. 9 overall (ninth in rushing and 13th in passing). The Falcons are No. 19 in overall offense (No. 16 in rushing and No. 15 in passing).
Carolina is No. 20 in total offense (No. 12 in rushing and No. 17 in passing).
