NFC South afternoon update

By Pat Yasinskas

As we wait for Wednesday evening’s announcement of the Pro Bowl rosters, let’s take a quick run through what’s happening around the rest of the division:

ATLANTA FALCONS

Coach Mike Smith said safety William Moore will miss the regular-season finale. The Falcons are playing this one properly. Moore has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury and the finale is meaningless. The Falcons might as well let Moore rest and get completely healthy for the playoffs. In fact, I won’t be surprised if some other Atlanta players get some rest Sunday.

CAROLINA PANTHERS

Guard Amini Silatolu was placed on injured reserve. That gives the Panthers a franchise record 18 players on injured reserve for the second straight year.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

Cornerback Jabari Greer could miss the season finale. Greer suffered a concussion Sunday and was held out of practice Wednesday. Since the game has no playoff implications, I’d expect the Saints to be very cautious with Greer.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

Cornerback Eric Wright said all the right things as he spoke to the media for the first time since returning from a four-game suspension. Wright said he apologized to teammates, the organization and ownership. That’s a good start, but there still is no guarantee Wright will be with the team next season because coach Greg Schiano has shown little tolerance for players that run into trouble. The Bucs desperately need help at cornerback, but they could address that in other ways. Wright’s $7.75 million salary for next season was supposed to be guaranteed. But the guarantee was voided when he was suspended. That means the Bucs could release Wright in the offseason without any salary-cap implications.
